Annival is a feast week in the Tynan Calendar of Ërdin which begins on the night of the winter solstice (Dunanna 28th) and continues through to midnight of the New Year (Novanna 1st). In addition to its primary function as a feast and a social gathering, it is also considered a particularly appropriate time for charity to the poor, gift-giving to children, and making peace.
In Dvirhim, this festival is considered the domain of a god called Kaelthiere the Hearthtender; by various accounts Kaelthiere is either the child of the dwarf deities Sharindlar and Vergadain, or an avatar over whom they possess collective authority. The Hearthtender is said to have a male dwarf’s body, perpetually soot-smeared features, and clothes of flame-red; it is also said that every fire that is lit in a hearth during Annival creates a spirit called an azer in Kaelthiere’s service on the Plane of Elemental Fire, and that every azer returns to its creators the next Annival to bestow Kaelthiere’s gifts of warmth, health, and hope upon any children in their household.
